Joining the Indie Beauty Fanatics group on Facebook was a fun decision, but definitely throws the door wide open to constant temptation – there are so many amazing indie brands being featured in that group that I’d never heard of despite my lurking and posting on /r/Indiemakeupandmore! One of those brands was Baby Bat Beauty, and I immediately fell in love with their name and aesthetic (I just love bats, they’re super cute, what can I say?) as well as a ton of their swatches. I decided to indulge when they posted a pretty hefty coupon code one weekend, and while I tried not to go too crazy, I did get a decent selection of their cosmetics that I’ll now review here.
All in all, I selected one blush, a liquid highlighter, two matte lipsticks (one classic, one liquid), and a gel eyeliner. The order also came with a cute logo sticker and some promo inserts, as you can see above!
Let’s go through each product, one by one.
Baby Bat Beauty’s Description: OUR HIGHLIGHTERS AND BLUSH ARE BUTTERY SMOOTH, PIGMENTED, AND LAST ALL DAY! THEY’RE SAFE FOR THE FACE, EYES, AND BODY UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED. THEY ARE ALSO OIL FREE!
THIS BLUSH IS A STUNNING ROSEY PINK WITH GOLD SHIMMER. IF APPLIED LIGHTLY AND BLENDED OUT IT CAN DOUBLE AS A SHIMMERY ROSEY GOLD HIGHLIGHTER AS WELL.
I love a good reddish-peachy blend for my cheeks – in my opinion, it’s the color combo that looks the most flattering on my skintone. This is a deeper rose gold than most, which made me very interested in how it would apply and look on my skin.
In the image above, the top swatch is one swipe; the bottom is two. As you can see, it’s extremely shimmery, so it’s not necessarily an everyday work blush – but I think it’s quite pretty and does work with my skin tone! I’ve actually also used it around my eyes in conjunction with ColourPop’s Come and Get It, and they complement each other very well as two tones on the same rose gold spectrum.
I also absolutely adore the bat that’s stamped into the pan – how cute is that?!
I found the wear of this blush to be average for me. For some reason, out of all the makeup products out there, I tend to lose my blush first. I think it may be partially because I don’t use a very heavy hand with my blush anyway, perhaps? But this seemed to have about the same wear time as my ColourPop Flush’d or my Too Faced Peach Berry, which are my two primary day-to-day blushes. At least, I didn’t notice it wearing off any earlier, and the small mirrored compact means that I can easily toss it in my purse if I’m really concerned about touch-ups later in the day.
Baby Bat Beauty’s Description: OUR DEW DROPS ARE ULTRA PIGMENTED LIQUID HIGHLIGHTERS! THEY’RE EXTREMELY VERSATILE AND CAN BE USED MIXED WITH FOUNDATION OR MOISTURIZER FOR AN ALL OVER DEWY LOOK. THEY CAN BE LAYERED UNDER FOUNDATION OR UNDER A POWDER HIGHLIGHTER TO MAKE IT POP, OR USED BY ITSELF! THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS.
THEY ARE ALSO VEGAN AND OIL FREE!
THIS DEW DROP SHADE IS A REFLECTIVE CHAMPAGNE NUDE. PERFECT FOR ALL SKINTONES.
I selected this product not necessarily to use as a highlighter, but more as a sheer, glossy eye wash. Think sort of like this gorgeous look from makeup artist Alex Olay:
While the Earth Goddess Dew Drops are obviously a more shimmery finish, they do retain a bit of that same champagne nude wet shimmer when swatched and blended out:
I’m not a huge highlighter user – I know, practically sacrilege in 2017 – but this is such a gorgeous color without being crazy blinding and flashy that I do actually use this on my cheeks sometimes as well as my lips or, mostly, an overall wash of color on my lids. This would easily be my favorite item from my purchase, except…
Baby Bat Beauty’s Description: ALL OF OUR LIPSTICKS HAVE A SMOOTH MATTE FINISH AND A DELICIOUS CUPCAKE SCENT. THIS MATTE LIPSTICK IS A WARM ORANGE NUDE. GREAT FOR ALL SKIN TONES!
I. Love. This. Lipstick. I’d been looking for a kind of interesting fall orange/copper lip color – both to wear alone and to top with ColourPop’s Polished UGL – and Bonfire Babe captivated me both for how creamy the application looked in the model photos on their site, but also how much it seemed to change on each model’s skintone. On the more medium-toned model, it looked like a gorgeous warm caramel that I immediately fell in love with, so I decided that I had to try it for myself!
Swatched on my arm, it looks like a bold, copper-caramel. However, it’s extremely buildable; a light application will give you a subtle version of this color, but you can very easily add more to strengthen the color without getting a clumpy or overly thick finish.
Here is the application level that I personally prefer on myself:
Since I promised to report back to a few people after I tried out my mini… I am decidedly not a fan of how much babysitting the new #urbandecay #mascara required – it was thick, tacky, took forever to dry & kept smearing if I even blinked too hard. I had to clean up crazy smudges like 5 times in 10 minutes ? I’ll stick to my $1 Mexican drug store mascara that imo looks just as good and doesn’t require a nanny, thanks~ I do, however, love the lipstick I’m trying out! It was also in my @babybatbeauty order and it’s called #bonfirebabe. Looks a lot more subtle in the bluer light in the 2nd photo, but that’s the same application just in different lighting ?? #mattelipstick #makeup #indiebeauty #babybatbeauty #colourpop #hammeredsss #moonwalksss
Make sure to click to the second photo as well – it’s the same application, but the lighting in my bedroom is a more blue-toned “daylight” and it not only really softens the color, but also gives you a better look onto what a soft, pillowy look the finish gives my lips. It’s a very comfortable matte formula!
Baby Bat Beauty’s Description: OUR MATTE LIQUID LIPSTICKS ARE ULTRA LONG WEARING, KISS PROOF AND DRY COMPLETELY MATTE WITH A COMFORTABLE FEEL. ACHIEVE A COMPLETELY OPAQUE LOOK WITH JUST ONE SWIPE.
A SLIGHTLY WARM TONED RED. PERFECT FOR EVERY SKIN TONE! OUR MATTE LIQUID LIPSTICKS ARE KISS PROOF AND ULTRA LONG WEARING WITH A COMFORTABLE MATTE FEEL.
Another selection with the fall season in mind, this is a warm red with a slight copper undertone. The finish of this is also quite nice, but – probably as expected, given that it’s a liquid lipstick – it’s not as easily buildable as the classic matte lipstick formula.
It’s still quite lovely, though:
One of my favorite things about this matte liquid lipstick is that it doesn’t bleed and migrate nearly as much as others that I’ve tried. I love ColourPop’s liquid lipsticks, truly, but even with liner, primer, or those invisible liners meant to “wall in” your lip color… they have a tendency to migrate and look slightly messy on me after awhile. I’m assuming it just comes down to the shape and size of my lips, perhaps?
Whatever the reason, I don’t have that issue with this formula. While this red is not something I am wearing constantly – mostly just because I’m not usually one for a super bold lip and red still takes some getting used to for me – I think it’s really pretty and am very glad that I purchased Persephone.
Baby Bat Beauty’s Description: MERMAID’S KISS IS A JET BLACK EYELINER WITH BLUE AND PURPLE MICRO-FINE GLITTER FOR A POP OF COLOR. IT GOES ON CREAMY AND DRIES TO A WATERPROOF, MATTE, AND SMUDGE PROOF FINISH. JUST USE YOUR FAVORITE EYELINER BRUSH TO APPLY! ONCE DRY, RUB THE COLOR AND MORE SPARKLES WILL APPEAR!
I am not a huge eyeliner user – I usually tend to very lightly line my aegyo sal area with a complementary shadow, as many eyeliner formulas tend to look harsh on me and make my eyes look a bit small. However, I do love a good gel eyeliner – shout out to the OG Smashbox pot formula that was the first time I had that “holy shit, this eyeliner actually works for me” moment – as I personally find them easier to control the application and prefer their finish.
Mermaid’s Kiss is a fun black base with purple and teal microglitters that I thought looked really cute and appealing for days when I was feeling a bit more dramatic or just wanted to sparkle a bit more!
The above swatch is one swipe, and I find this gel liner quite easy to work with compared to some of the other liners I’ve purchased recently; in general, though, I prefer gel formulas/finishes in both eyeliner and brow products, so this is probably not surprising.
I think that I did a good job choosing my little mini-haul – and my friends can tell you I did in fact agonize for a few days over which precise lip colors to pick out, so I’m relieved that I’m so happy with all of my selections!
Bonfire Babe is definitely my favorite, both for the versatility of the shade and the comfortable finish of the matte formula.
The Earth Goddess Dew Drops come in a close second place, because they achieve exactly what I hoped for when I decided to order them.
Gilded Rose has seen a pretty decent amount of use; while it’s not something I reach for in the daytime due to the shimmer, I’ve pulled it out for a lot of date nights.
Persephone and Mermaid’s Kiss are very situational for me compared to the rest of the order, just because of the makeup looks I tend to favor. However, they’re both gorgeous and well-formulated, and I’m happy to have them in my arsenal.
Eventually, I’d like to try Baby Bat Beauty’s Metallic Lip Creams as well – if I can find the confidence for such a dramatic lip color, I think Meteor in particular is just beautiful – as well as more of the Dew Drops. I’m most interested in Blushing Goddess, but I might treat myself to Golden Goddess as well someday. I will also absolutely be keeping an eye on any new additions to the Matte Lipstick roster, and perhaps might snag Spring Fling or Summer for, well, summer.
I do want to point out that while my picks were all more on the subdued side – just my virtue of what I tend to wear frequently enough to justify – Baby Bat Beauty does stock a lot of vivid and more unusual and unique shades. So please go give them a poke around if the formulas and finishes I’ve described here intrigue you, even if you’re not into my personal shade selections!
