Wow, it’s been awhile since I did a haul post, huh? I’m happy to say that the reason is mainly because I did manage to stick to a beauty no-buy for several months; beyond the essentials like replacement shampoo, deodorant, renewing my PocketDerm script, etc, I’ve been a very good girl and have stuck to just whittling down my massive stash rather than making new purchases.
This urge was only solidified when I saw that Sephora had brought back a kit that I’d missed and envied horribly last year: their Summer Sun Safety set. Given how the sunscreen category seems to have exploded this year (seriously, browsing through the sun protection category, it seems like almost every brand has recognized what we Asian beauty devotees already realized: people with different skincare needs also have different sunscreen formulation needs, as well – look at all those new products!) it’s actually probably a blessing in disguise that I waited until this year, just for the new variety!
As you can see, I ended up buying a few more things than just the suncare kit… they had a number of kits that really piqued my interest from brands that I’d been lusting after for some time, so I just went a little nuts. This is a full-blown Sephora haul!
Hit the jump to see all the madness~
Obviously, the star attraction and the item that I’m most excited for was the Sun Safety Kit:
The kit is $32, $20 of which is then donated to The Skin Cancer Foundation, which certainly helps justify the purchase. Of course, if you have finicky skin and haven’t yet hit on your HG sunscreen, the variety of brands and products may be enough to lure you in on its own, right?
The items come packaged in a hot-pink-and-clear zippered reusable back, so if you do a lot of traveling that’s another benefit.
Here’s the full list of all the goodies included:

So far, I’ve only tried out the Shiseido sunscreen and I was pretty pleased. I’d previously tried the PTR lotion and found it a tad too rich for my skin, but that was before I started using retinoids, so I’m open to trying it again as my skin is much thirstier nowadays. And obviously, like almost everyone else, I love love love Fresh lip balms – I just can’t really justify their absurd normal price point. So I’m always happy to get their minis in a kit!
The Josie Maran oil I probably won’t touch until winter comes around again, based on how reviews seem to paint it as kind of heavy. I think that I’m most excited to try the Korres (in spite of my spotty track record with them – I tend to be love or hate on their products), the infamous Supergoop! serum, and the Murad Invisiblur.
Given my general appreciation for all the other Dr. Jart+ products that I’ve tried, it’s probably no surprised that I scooped up their Dynamic Duo set, which includes mini-sizes of their best-selling Premium Beauty Balm and their Dermaclear Micro Water.
I’ve absolutely been hoarding every last drop of my beloved Insobeau Perfect Deep Clean One-Step Cleansing Water (I received it in this Memebox and absolutely fell head over heels; I’ve tried a few other cleansing waters and nothing else comes close) so I was mostly interested in the prospect of finding a more accessible (seriously, if you know where to buy Insobeau products reliably, please tell me!) cleansing water that might compare.
At the time of this writing, I’ve already used up the entire mini bottle and was quite pleased with it. I was using it as my morning cleanser and it seemed to work just fine without leaving any gross residue or drying feeling. I’m planning on buying the full-size bottle from Sephora next month as a means to redeem my free birthday gift, so I’ll do a complete review after that.
Following that theme, it’s probably not a surprise that I redeemed some VIB points for a deluxe sample tube of Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Day Tint. I haven’t opened it yet, but given how much I liked their Ceramidin serum, I’m excited to try this!
Another mini set – this time a fragrance one: Tocca Girls On The Go includes miniature rollerballs of their Simone, Florence, Cleopatra and Stella scents.
I’d not really tried this brand before, but so many of their fragrances sounded really appealing and the brand generally nets really good reviews. I’d missed the Christmas ‘Meet the Girls’ mini set, so when I saw that this new set had been released AND featured the ‘girl’ that I was most interested in trying (Simone), I had to pull the trigger.
Honestly, I’m really happy with this kit. All four scents are gorgeous and definitely fragrances that I can see myself wearing. In a happy fulfillment of expectation, I absolutely love Simone and have been wearing it every single day since I received my order.
Expect a full review post on these babies coming soon!
Next up is some hair goodies:
Ahhh, Drybar. While I’ve never been to their famous salon, I have to say that I absolutely love the gimmick of their packaging and naming scheme. Everything is named after famous alcoholic beverages, and I guess that my fondness for cosmetics packaged as food/candy translates easily into hair products packaged as booze!
I’d always wanted to try the brand based on the marketing – I’d managed to glean a few samples of the Cream Soda Smoothing Cream and while I loved the effect, the scent was a bit too much for me. I think that if I hadn’t gone in expecting it to smell like, well, cream soda (as you know, I like my cosmetics to smell like food), I might’ve been more fond of the scent… but regardless, the heavy spice scent on that particular product was a bit much for me. I’d seen some reviews that stated the smoothing cream was the most strongly scented product they produced, so I decided to give the rest of the brand another shot eventually. After all, like I said – effectwise I loved the smoothing cream. It was just too highly scented for me!
I’ll save the in-depth reviews for when I’ve had more experience with each product, but so far I’ve used them all at least once and I have to say that I’m really impressed. They all do their advertised job without making my super-fine but high-volume hair too weighed down or crunchy, and as I’d been told – the scents, while still obviously very present, are much more subdued than the punch-in-the-nose all-caps FRAGRANCE!!! of the cream soda smoother.
I’m definitely wishlisting some of their other goodies now!
I’ve been really impressed with all the Formula X polishes that I’ve picked up since Sephora started carrying them, so when I saw that another of my desired shades had been put on sale, of course I tossed it in my bag!
This is Hyped, one of their ‘Electrics’ described as ‘electric magenta pearl’. I’d looked up some swatches (you can see some nice photos of this shade at The PolishAholic and Vampy Varnish) and totally fallen in love with the superbright purple glitter as a summery toe polish. So I’m happy to add it to my collection – I love having bright, sparkly toes when it’s sunny out, what can I say?
Last up is the sample squad. Aside from the normal three freebies that you get to select at checkout…
As you can see, I selected:
– ‘REPLICA’ Beach Walk by Maison Martin Margiela
– Flowerbomb by Viktor & Rolf (yes, I’d somehow managed to never try this before now even though it’s been out for years!)
– Laura Mercier’s Foundation Primer ‘Radiance’
I haven’t actually opened and tried any of these yet, though.
I also redeemed a promo code for a big packet of fragrance samples.
The code is BELOVED and appears to still be active – you can see the details at this page. You get your selection between two themed sample packs – Fresh and Floral or Spicy and Earthy. I selected Fresh and Floral, in part because I’m in the summer mindset and also because I’ve already sampled or owned many of the Spicy and Earth selections!
The fact that F&F included some scents that I’d desperately been wanting to try out also helped, of course.
Here’s the rundown:
– Mandarin Glaciale by Atelier Colognes (this was one of my big wants)
– Nirvana White by Elizabeth & James
– My Burberry by Burberry
– Love Story by Chloé
– Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet by Dior (my second desired scent)
– Fresh by Tory Burch
– Live Joyously by Philosophy
So far I’m absolutely enamored with Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet – I’ve been rotating it with the aforementioned Tocca Simone and they’re both such great scents for the spring-into-summer transition. Given that central Ohio has been having a milder, rainier summer so far than usual, having such fragrances is surely helping to cut through the overcast weather and help me feel a bit more sunny!
All in all, a pretty nice haul, don’t you think?
