If you follow me on twitter, you probably know that I’ve been hyped as hell for the Guardians of the Galaxy movie release. I read the comics and have been using Gamora (specifically, Phalanx-possessed Gamora from the impossibly amazing Nova series) as my avatar just about everywhere! That GotG just so happened to release on the weekend of my birthday was sheer kismet, and I spend the day in nerdy bliss watching Gamora, Star-Lord, Rocket, Groot, and Drax kick ass across the universe in 3-D. The movie was excellent, with fantastic casting, a flawless soundtrack, and a plot that ran the gamut from touching to funny to badass. Seriously, go see it – even if you’re not familiar with the franchise at all, if you dig sci-fi even a little bit, you’ll probably love Guardians of the Galaxy.
The fact that I suspect they were laying some groundwork for a possible Nova movie was just icing on the cake – seriously, I have his UMVC3 theme as my ringtone for a reason, people. The Nova love is serious. Give me Richard Rider on the big screen noooooowwwww, Marvel! Let’s get some Carol Danvers in the mix as well – I’m honestly hoping that the reason she recently joined the Guardians in the comics is because Marvel wants to introduce her to all the new GotG fans and build a base for when she gets her own movie. Captain Marvel’s a total badass, and I’d love to see her played by Katee Sackhoff or Yvonne Strahovski. And Nova? Well, the now-debunked rumours that they were considering Nathan Fillion for the role of Richard Rider isn’t a bad one, but I’m not married to that idea just yet.
With all that said, I thought I’d share some of the best (in my opinion) Guardians of the Galaxy merchandise floating around the web – both official and unofficial.
So crank up the Awesome Mix, Vol. 1 and let’s get down to business!
Nerdy nail polishes are one of my weaknesses! I first found these polishes sometime in July, and actually purchased the Star-Lord and Gamora shades. They arrived today and look totally fab – I’ll do my best to get swatches & a review up for them after I have a chance to try them out with my various basecoats and see how the wear/lifespan rates.
From left to right: Plant We All Get Along (Groot), The Gamorous Life (Gamora), Something Good, Something Bad…A Bit of Both (Star-Lord), Draximum Security (Drax the Destroyer), and In the Black Holes of Sirius Major (Rocket Raccoon). I’ve linked to the set, but they’re available for individual purchase as well.

It seems like most people who went into the movie without any prior GotG knowledge came away with either Rocket Raccoon or Groot as their favorite character. Indeed, they’re both pretty fantastic. I like this Rocket Raccoon shirt because it’s more subtle than just having his face plastered on your chest – for some reason, I’m usually just not a fan of the basic “slap the character’s photo on a shirt and call it a day” aesthetic. I prefer more minamalist designs, and this one looks pretty good to me!
Pretty simple, this is just a sticker modeled to look like the label on Star-Lord’s beloved Awesome Mix, Vol 1 cassette tape. You can either put it on an actual cassette tape, or on your phone as displayed, or… well, wherever else you’d like. Fun stuff!
If you loved the mid-credits Groot scene as much as I did, this baby Groot sculpture might be a prime candidate for desk decor. The artist lets you pick his expression and says of the finished product: “They are going to receive green highlights and more detailed painting, and will be placed into a small pot, complete with fake soil.”
A few Etsy sellers are trying their hand at this item, but I personally thought that this shop had the best-looking version. If Marvel’s merchandising department is smart, they’ll churn out an official version of baby-Groot-in-his-planter as well!
We only got a small glimpse of the Nova Corps in this movie, but it’s inspired hope within me that we see much more of them in the future. After all, why would they pay for big names like Glenn Close and John C. Reilly if they didn’t want us to remember those characters for future reasons? At least, that’s what I’m telling myself!
Keeping with my preference for minimalist references when it comes to clothing, this shirt features the three-point logo that’s synonymous with the Nova Corps. I totally bought one myself and plan to use it as a workout/lounge around the house kind of deal!
6. Guardians of the Galaxy Vinyl Pop Figures from ThinkGeek
These are too cute, right? I normally don’t go for figures and bobbleheads and the like, but even I’m sorely tempted by the adorable mini-deformed Groot, Gamora, and Star-Lord vinyl pop figures! Groot seems to be sold out just about everywhere, unfortunately, so unless retailers get to restock, you’ll probably have to go the eBay route or find a seller on Amazon if you NEED that little Groot in your life.
This is a unique, alternative design of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie poster. I personally think it’s pretty stylish and I love the pink accents! As cute as Chris Pratt may be, I love Star-Lord the most when he has his mask on, so this poster earns points for actually using a masked image of Peter Quill.
8. Guardians of the Galaxy by Abnett & Lanning: The Complete Collection Volume 1 from Marvel Comics
This collection doesn’t release until August 12th, but if you saw the movie and are looking to get into the comic series, this collection will be as good a starting point as any. $20 for 12 comic books isn’t bad at all (I say this with the assumption that you’re not a jackass who steals comics – books live and die by their sales, so it’s pretty important – and just plain the right thing to do – to actually put money behind the titles that you like if you want them to continue) and this series does a good job of familiarizing the reader with not only the characters present in the movie, but also Cosmo (remember that dog in the astronaut outfit?), Mantis, Phyla-Vell’s Quasar, and Adam Warlock (who just miiiight have been teased as a future character in the MCU in that end-credits theme if you knew where to look).
9. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1: Cosmic Avengers (Marvel Now) from Marvel Comics
If you’d rather jump in to the current, ongoing Guardians of the Galaxy comic, you’ll want to start here. Starting in 2011, this iteration of the series features the movie roster as well as a few other familiar faces: Iron Man, Venom, Angela, and Captain Marvel all join the team! The most recent issue just released last week and the teaser promises that next issue will feature the return of my beloved Richard Rider (and… Thanos?), so all the more reason to pick up this particular book – just be warned, Nova addiction can be very serious. I know, I’m in deep – ComiXology is probably ready to start an intervention after looking at my recent binge of Nova-related purchases…
Last but not least, this is the polish that I actually wore when I went to go see GotG myself! Sure, she’s not in the movie, but Carol Danvers IS a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy as of this year. She saved Star-Lord’s butt from public execution, so she damn well gets to be on my list, okay?
Designed to evoke the feeling of space and starfields, this polish is pretty much perfect for any sci-fi fans. It’s described as a blue/black base with red and yellow holo glitter, but on me I feel like the base goes a bit dark green – which is fine with me! I think it’s just how the light works with the base and the glitter together, because the first coat definitely looks blue/black, but as you get more glitter in subsequent coats, the green started to appear. I need to do a proper swatch and review of this polish sometime, I really do love it!
That’s about it for me – there’s an absolute ton of Guardians of the Galaxy merchandise out there right now, with more to come as both official channels and indies jump on the hype wave, I’m sure. I hope that you guys liked my picks, and if you haven’t seen the movie yet – what are you waiting for? Stop reading and go park your butt in a theater this instant!
